South of Wadi Halfa the Nile swings
in a large loop to the west, the main road takes the direct route
south skirting the Nubian Desert and rejoining the river at Abu
Hamed, but we follow the river road via Akasaha, Delgo, El Khandaq,
Ed Debba, Merowe and Abu Hamed to Atbara.
Atbara lies at the confluence
of the Nile and the Atbara rivers and is famous for being the
centre of all things to do with railways in Sudan; most of the
town is based around the station.
Architecturally, it is interesting,
as most rail workers' houses in Sudan are domed huts made from
brick, built by the British. Most towns have a cluster of these
huts, but Atbara is full of them.
Atbara is a pleasant place to spend a day.
