El Golea - Ghardaia (225km)

(Stage 13.2) a

Algeria - driving from El Golea to Ghardaia arriving on 3rd January 2003

Rallye mail

Friday 3rd January. Off once more after a delay while all vehicles were cleaned of sand and dust and again, like a mechanical camel train we made slow determined progress and travelled north a slightly greater distance to Ghardaia.

The camel is called the ship of the desert and the sea and desert have uncanny similarities - both can be stunningly beautiful and astoundingly cruel. After several days driving we were still in Algeria and Tripoli seemed a long way away. We have developed a considerable respect for the hardy folk who have found how to enjoy their lives in such harsh conditions.
