Timimoun - El Homr (150km)

(Stage 12)

Algeria - arriving at El Homr from Timimoun on 31.12.2002

The rally continued its difficult journey skirting the Grand Erg Occidental (big, difficult sandy bit) towards Tunisia and Libya.

Rallye mail

The schedule showed that we should be having a lager in Alexandria on New Year's Day and by a stroke of good fortune there was room to add the word 'Chinese' before the word 'New' and still be in with a chance.

We set out travelling north east with the aim of reaching Tripoli in Libya. We didn't get very far because, although the wind was not as strong, the fine dust played havoc with carburetors and we had, reluctantly, to accept a low mileage and enjoy the hospitality of El Homr.

We stayed up to celebrate the new year and then enjoyed a good night's sleep. We awoke to find the New Year had opened with another vigorous sand storm. We spent New Year's Day indoors.

Wednesday 2nd and the storm had eased - we decided to prepare for another run towards Tripoli on Thursday

The Organisers Apologise for the break in the Rallye Sud schedule.
Chronic Sand-Storms have force all competitors to lay up until conditions improve and this has coincided with a successful takeover of Rallye Sud by 2CVTV, the media wing of Frognosh International. (Dated 20 January 2003)

Thursday dawned clear and bright, so we set off on the long run to Tripoli.
