Igli - Timimoun (388km)

(Stage 11)

Algeria - from Igli to Timimoun arriving on 27th December 2002

The rally left on Friday following the bed of River Oued Saoura south-east into the northern Sahara, skirting the Great Erg Occidental, from Igli past Ksabi turning north-east to reach the oasis of Timimoun. It was a cool and refreshing overnight stop, drinks at the oasis and rest with the camels.

Timimoun

The oasis of Timimoun is south of the Grand Erg Occidental where it is ferociously hot in summer. It has palm trees and a water supply. The local houses are made with mud, a mixture of the local red soil and water baked hard in the sun.

News

Overnight a sandstorm blew up and was still raging on Saturday morning. We appreciated that we had not been caught without shelter in a remote part of the Sahara - things would have been very difficult indeed.

The storm continued through Sunday 29th and was still blowing when we awoke on Monday. The day was spent preparing the cars for the next stretch and as conditions had improved a great deal we set off first thing on Tuesday 31st December, New Year's Eve.
