Happy New Year

Number 73

Chat from the Chair

If this letter is late it is my fault. ( & mine - ed.) The seasonal festivities have taken their toll. Our last meeting was fun. Christmas jollity had entered the arena and everyone was really pleased to see each other. Our secret raffle provided some amusement too. The management also sent in a large plate of mince pies with their compliments so it can’t be bad. I really hope you all had a good time over Christmas. Bill bought us an excellent book - "Sixty Years of the 2CV" by John Reynolds. It is lovely - it is sixty because plans, tests etc. began in 1937 but WAR prevented earlier production. Do try and get it if you can.

Tim and Anny wish everyone Bonne Année.

I must also publicly thank Barry for providing my French friend Valerie with a Plums & Custard 2CV. She is over the moon with the newest member of her family. She had driven one before as you can imagine in France. Her father was a farmer so she drove it over ploughed fields etc. Her father is totally bemused by the enthusiasm we have for the car. Well I guess French farmers cannot understand. He even sent us a card thanking us all for looking after Valerie’s attempt to buy a car. Bill has subsequently polished it for her and it looks like new. Since she is a French teacher going to a new school she had to have a car to enhance her image, so what else !

See you soon,

Gill.

New Year’s Bar-B-Q

As you may have noticed New Year’s Day dawned bright and sunny. The Macdonalds (yes - all 5 of us) accompanied Gill & Bill to join the Fils de Vitesse convoy from Farnham to Hayling Island. A convoy of some 8 or 9 cars set out from the garden centre car park. Richard was still searching for charcoal so didn’t stay with us for long.

It wasn’t long before the weather person was proved right - we drove through torrential showers, hail as well as sunshine !

We approached the pointed bit of Hayling Island and passed other 2CV’s including Bob Brotherton and then we arrived at the car park - sea spray was flying over the beach huts and when we got out of the car it proved difficult to stand upright !

Quite a surprising number of crazy people had already arrived. Richard had found some fuel and set about lighting the barbecue in the shelter of Pete’s H-Van and two windbreaks. It took some doing to light the kindling but before long a good blaze was built and not long after the cooking and eating began.

A number of us were using our own children as an excuse to relive our childhood - looking over the edge of the sea wall and then running back to hide behind the beach huts before the big wave got us. The waves were now breaking over the wall and a large puddle formed in the car park - Bob’s van was ankle deep in the middle of it.

Just as we were leaving Colin and Jill turned up - in the people carrier - some feeble excuse about a heavy night ! It was only when we were back in the car and heading for home that we realised quite how cold we were ! I think I’d been home in Guildford for about an hour before I really thawed out !

Plagiarism Rules !

The following article appeared in the Thames Tortoises Newsletter under the title of "How To Improve Your Life" - Thanks Jonathan but no real apologies because it’s such a good tip !

Tired of feeling inferior to those people with Charlestons and Dollies ? Despair no longer ! You too can have the luxury and privacy of a specially made parcel shelf hitherto only available to owners at the luxury end of the deuch market. This miraculous invention not only provides privacy for all your private belongings (preventing them from being snatched from the car by opportunistic thieving !"@£$%^’s) but is also perfect for housing your car radio speakers. The brilliant design of the shelf enables it to rest on the inside ledge of the rear quarter light windows covering the boot from prying camera grabbers.

You will need a piece of plywood (teak or mahogony will do I suppose) large enough for the template shown in Fig. 1. Please note that the measurements may vary slightly on individual cars and that it would be best to cut the board larger and then sand to make a perfect fit. If you don’t have a school workshop handy then you will also need a tenon saw (for the straight lengths) and a small hacksaw to cut the speaker holes (if required).

When completed the shelf can be sanded and varnished or painted to match your car. It is easiest to fit by removing the rear seat, when replaced the seat will then hold the shelf in place.

Merrist Wood - NOT ....

We have had to change the venue ! Between our telephone ‘booking’ and written confirmation another group - a Summer School - has booked the whole complex for the same weekend. No amount of words could persuade the Principal to have the 2 events at the same time so we have lost out.

However we have found another site - University Vandals Rugby Club in Walton-on-Thames. It is by the river on an island and will suit us well and it is very cheap. There are plenty of facilities - bar, toilets, showers, function room and use of more than 3 rugby pitches for camping. I will say more at the next meeting.

As you can imagine, we have been rushing around like ........ to get a suitable venue that would not cost an arm and a leg. I was beginning to think I would cancel Christmas until we got sorted but it did not happen that way.

Christmas Common

It was not snowy, rainy or foggy ... what happened ? It was sunny.

Seven cars convoyed from Staines to Christmas Common. I was leading so I don’t know what reaction we got as we drove through Windsor and Henley. In Henley I was checking in my mirror for cars and thought "I don’t remember a green and white ‘Dolly’ in Staines", but there it was. "Was it Lynne & Ham ?" I thought.

We turned off main roads to slowly climb up the hills. (Boldly splitting infinitives en route - ed.) We met some ‘off road’ vehicles who had been dustbineering. I thought that we could have done that too. I wonder what they thought of us ?

In the car park there was a lovely blue H-Van with Tony, Vivian and 2 others from B.A.T.S or Hobby Horses and yes it was Lynne, Ham, James & Heather.

We set off downhill first, at quite a brisk pace. Then we stopped for a group photo. Tony (White) just made it to the group in time before the camera went off. It was then uphill all the way back to the cars. I must be unfit because I ended bringing up the rear instead of leading. It was a good walk and then a drive downhill to the pub for food. This pub - "The Carriers Arms" does not know about small portions of food. I think Lynne & Ham had a week’s supply of Stilton for their Ploughman’s ! James’ omelette was colossal.

A lot of chat went on. I left early because I was expecting my family to return from Cornwall en route to France and wanted to be back in time.

Thanks everyone for coming. Next year I will get it into the magazine in December. I think we could get a lot more people to come along.
