Southern Clubs News - The
Camp - 24-26 July
Everything is coming together. We just hope that lots of you out there will come to
camp. If not please come on Saturday or Sunday for a bit of fun.
We have plenty happening to interest any 2CV fans out there. Friday night we will have
a disco and of course the bar !
The main event during Saturday is the convoy to Brooklands Museum where up to 60
privileged spaces have been reserved for us. Before that you will find trade stalls, flea
market and organised childrens entertainment. Early evening will see the
communal barbecue lighting - bring your own food - or you can visit the travelling burger
van etc. Later in the evening the disco will fill in between live music from the
Jump Leads - with a bar extension to 11:45 what more can you want ?
Main event for Sunday will be the concours delegance - not only the best
preserved car will win prizes - look in your goody bag when you arrive for a voting slip
detailing the categories. Around midday well cut the birthday cake.
Duck Racing in the New Forest
This Duck race is a long-standing annual event. For the past 3 years they have combined
it with a camp at the Red Shoot Inn at Linwood. I decided to go this year. Bill was busy
(to say the least) with Royal Ascot, so I set off from home to meet the Macdonalds in
Guildford. I was a bit late but on reflection this may have been a plus because we missed
all the traffic jams on the motorways. Heather came with me - at least she is more
interesting than their sleeping bags which I have carried before !
The route through the forest on a lovely sunny evening was so peaceful and beautiful
that we were really relaxed by the time we arrived. We were shown to the end of a crowded
campsite to be greeted by Dave & Louise who were the early birds ! A lot of the Ducks
were there but they did not have far to travel ! I gravitated to the pub after getting my
tent set up. I had a lovely meal and a natter before returning to my tent.
Early in the morning it began to rain - a drizzle really - this was not the weather
forecast. However, Bill & I had bought a gazebo .... so with Daves help I put it
up and solved the problem of cooking and eating breakfast with only a small tent. I think
the Madhatters were consumer testing gazebos. We now had three between us. The rain
stopped by 11 am and blazing sunshine was the order of the day. I stayed on site and sat
and read a book. Others went sightseeing or walking to a pub. Later I went to Ringwood
(got a bit lost) and then returned to find more 2CVs had arrived and a boules competition
organised.
Dick & Yvette then arrived sans camping gear because the weather forecast was not
good. (How wrong can you get) We had a pleasant afternoon, Madhatters won the Boules and
we had a communal BBQ. As usual this drifted on to chats and drinks - so relaxing.
Sunday saw the sun again and relaxing times before striking camp. Bill & Kirsty
arrived - they had both worked on Saturday so came to relax. We made our way to the pub
for lunch and saw lots of 2CVs converging to join the race in the afternoon. A convoy of
more than 30 cars left the campsite to wend its way to the stream. We turned quite a few
heads in the forest.
Those people in the Forest who had come for a quiet afternoon out soon were in for a
surprise. Ducks of all sorts, shapes and sizes were launched into the stream. Louise in
her enthusiasm found herself in the stream, a duck keeper releasing caught
ducks and making waves in sluggish water. The Madhatters did not win .... never mind we
went back to Rhinefield Lodge gatehouse for a curry/chilli feast - thanks Jeff and
Adrienne for the magnificent food. Bills fuel pipe was causing problems at this
point so Jeff and John helped to rescue him. We then set off through the forest to miss
the traffic jams. Our convoy was about six or seven cars at one point but we lost quite a
few on the way. (I nearly knocked down a pony - James brakes are good !) John Rooney
also led us to the M3 avoiding the Winchester jams, so we had a good journey up the A31.
It was along this road that some of the lost souls of the convoy reappeared.
They had taken a slightly different route. The good news is that all the Madhatters met at
the Macdonald house. Lynne was relieved - all her children were safely back. Coffee and
tea was provided - thanks - and a good weekend came to an end.
Gill
France or Bust (and we did !), David and Andrews Story
Andrew, my son (one of them) and I started
off for Paris with a very full car. We noticed it was struggling a bit but more of
that later. Having joined in the convoy to Dover, then taking the new route with the
others, apart from having a noticeably slow car, we enjoyed the company very much and,
after more or less keeping in convoy, made it to the site. However, together with John
& Sandie, we got separated from the other cars (not difficult in the dark and general
mass of 2CVs) and eventually deposited ourselves in what seemed the only space available.
The next few days seemed to go in a flash. The memorable things will be the tiny spider
invasions of the tents, the photos from the top of the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower,
of course the convoy, the awful "Light Show" and Andrews desire for a 2CV
convertible.
And our trip home ! We set off on the Monday morning but once on the motorway (about 7
cars) it became apparent all was not well. Lack of power and a hot running engine meant we
were slowing the others down, so it was agreed everyone else would go ahead, whilst we
stayed with John & Sandie who were also a bit slower, towing a trailer.
Eventually, with Andrew driving, we had to stop. The car just made it into a picnic
area and ground to a halt. We had taken out AA cover so we should be OK ! HA ! HA ! John
& Sandie pushed on after discussion, there was not much they could do. So off to the
phones !
- Emergency phone does not work (we tried !)
- Go to normal phone - only takes cards not money.
- No problem, use my mobile phone which I have logged onto the French network. No Signal !
- Chat up French lorry driver for help (no English), use his card to phone number given in
AA book. After much kerfuffle told to use Freephone number for France (nothing about this
in the AA book or travel agent instructions.)
- After six goes get Freephone number, after giving details told we are on "private
motorway" and to phone 17 to get police breakdown assistance.
- Phone 17, police speak no English, eventually, with my French and help from a passing UK
truck driver, arrange breakdown callout.
- After 1 hour truck arrives (does not speak English) with help of phrase books etc., he
changes points & plugs, only 1 cylinder firing. Will not make it to Calais (about 140
miles). Get transported to his garage. AA want me to get it repaired and collect it next
week. Fat chance ! Insist on repatriation. Garage negotiates with AA (takes 1½ hours) and
agrees transport to Calais. Andrew thinks we will never get back to UK. I tell him
casually "its all experience" whilst vowing never to use AA again !
- Very helpful garage gives us coffee etc., charges us £10 for the parts used, arranges
transporter to Calais (which delivers us right up to the ferry) and we get towed onto the
boat. (very much later than intended)
- Phone AA from boat as instructed (none of the phones on boat working so Purser does it
in the end). After being given loads of different numbers to phone by various AA offices,
eventually arrange pick-up other end. (would have cost me a fortune in phone calls)
- Arrive at Dover, towed off, no AA. Port staff call local office, normal van arrives. Oh,
have we broken down ? Threaten to kill all AA staff. After 2 hours, Relay organised to
Oxted. Eventually arrive home at 11pm. (I note that both AA and Green Flag will not, now,
cover cars over 10 years old, which is of course normal for insurance operators who will
refuse to cover the things you are taking out insurance for in the first place) (so how do
we get cover for over 10 year old cars ?)
The car is at Barrys, with burnt out exhaust valve. I hope to pick it up in time
for Wessex Ducks "do" in the New Forest. (Glad to report that Dave was indeed at
the Duck Race - ed.) The quality of service given by the AA cover was appalling but we did
get home eventually so I suppose we should be grateful.
Would I do it again ? Well, subject to having found a new job (One to One not renewing
our departments contracts) Yes ! A great event with excellent company.
