Number 84 - December 1998

Editorial

I’d like to draw your attention to the plagiarised article from the Les Fils de Vitesse newsletter. I make no apologies for this copying and thank Tony both for this article and for all his previous work as equipment officer as well as Vice-Chairman. I am concerned because we have on a number of occasions made use of the PA, the potato baker and various flags, poles etc. which have made our events more enjoyable while putting on a professional display. On the other hand I must apologise again for the late arrival of this letter. Work has continued to take its toll. As much of that work has involved sitting in front of one of these ‘television’ screens my eyes have been boggled by the time the kids let me near this PC in the evenings.I hope you’ve noticed the new address for Barry’s workshop. Although this is still in Shalford it is roughly opposite his previous location at Shalford Green Garage. Look out for the alleyway beside Seymour’s, the kitchen makers.

And finally...

Happy New Year to all our readers.

Ham

Chat from the Chair

I suppose I should start by saying "Merry Christmas & Happy New Year". You may not get another Newsletter until January !

It seems hardly any time since 1998 began. What a year of celebrations. We all have our memories of each party that we went to, so I won’t dwell on any party in particular. It’s a shame we can’t celebrate every year but no doubt we can find excuses.

Last meeting was a bit low on numbers but we had a good chat. Robyn wanted to sell a "Colin Jenkins" boot box/kitchen but so far no takers.

This month (December) I have arranged to have a few sandwiches & mince pies for our meeting, so come along and join us for a small celebration. The manager of the pub has changed again and will do so again in the New Year !We have been to France again ... This time by train but we saw quite a lot of 2CVs during the weekend. We were being driven around Toulouse and the Pyrenees in a Renault Éspace (there were 6 of us) and it was excellent and economical.

Take a look at the events list and come along for some fun - Christmas Common - Hayling Island - see you there !

Whatever Happened to the 2CVGB Equipment Officer ?

In answer to the many local club members who are puzzled by the ‘TBA’ against this position in 2CVGB news, I thought it might be worth just jotting a few notes down, particularly as I held the post for the four years up until the 1998 AGM in September. During those four years and before I took over the post, the 2CVGB event equipment was kept in a lock-up in Reading which was convenient for both my predecessor (who lived in Henley) and myself (I work in Bracknell) to keep an eye on things and arrange collection/delivery as and when necessary. The arrangement seemed to work very well and to my knowledge no event, wherever it was held in the country, suffered a lack of equipment providing adequate notice was given.

In the months preceding the AGM several things happened in quick succession. It was decided to combine the Parts and Equipment Officers’ positions, move the equipment to Rugby or Crick in Northamptonshire and close the Reading lock-up, all of which had a certain amount of logic about it although no-one seemed sure how it was actually going to work. The thing that upset all the plans was Doug Phillips’s decision to stand down after many years of dedicated work with the parts side and no-one standing for the new Parts/Equipment job at the AGM.  I did make representations to at least retain the Equipment Officer post until the situation was resolved,  but to no avail.

Thus we are in a position where, to the best of my knowledge, we have no parts, equipment or SPOG representatives on the 2CVGB committee and no Vice-Chairman either. The equipment is already being stored at Crick (or maybe Rugby) so how exactly one goes about obaining the use of the potato-baker, PA system, flags, etc. during the coming year is, at the moment, a bit of a mystery.

The End of the Trip to Lempdes

I left you at the end of the Saturday night feast. Sunday breakfast was good and then it was back to the Mairie. When we got there we found a display of old Citroën cars and lorries and a strange parcel outside. It was in paper and done up with red, white & blue ribbon.

After speeches - most of which I understood - the grand unveiling ceremony took place. What we saw was a 2CV made out of thick wire with every large bolt in place and the steering column & wheels. It had taken enthusiastic craftsmen ages to make. It will stand by the large roundabout in Lempdes.

After this we went to the Salle Polyvalente where free aperitifs & nibbles were on offer. We were entertained by the Music College big band. We then went to our favourite restaurant for lunch before we made a last tour of the town and headed for home. BY now the weather was not looking good so we headed up the motorway and to hell with the cost. It rained all the way to Tours. We found a cheap hotel, booked in and went to find food. The amazing thing was that Nicky & Jeff (Wessex Ducks) managed to find us in the hotel and restaurant. It was a lovely meal and we returned for a good sleep.

I knocked on John & Adriennes’s door on the way to breakfast. John came down to say that Adrienne had been really ill all night. We knew we had to make it home that day, so Adrienne rested in the car and we shopped in the supermarket.

We then set out for home. Five of us stuck togethe. Adrienne was really poorly. Jeff kept taking photos of her which at the time Adrienne was not happy with.

We made it at the last moment onto the fast ferry at Cherbourg. It’s funny how the last few kilometres to any ferry takes ages. Adrienne was still poorly and the boat made it worse. I won’t embarrass her by repeating what she said ... but eventually she slept.

We got to Portsmouth and it was only about ½ hour later when we got to Chandlers Ford, put Adrienne to bed and I left for home. It had been a wonderful weekend of memories.

Thanks to the Mairie and the local clubs for a great time.

Sweatshirts

These are wonderful. Kirstie Woodman has done a brilliant job. They arrived via John & Helen (Thames Tortoises and Madhatters) because Helen works with Kirstie’s husband. What we do to avoid extra costs. They are £15 each and we only have 25, so come next month and get yours before they all go. They are dark green with a red and black ‘logo’.

Gill.
