Goodwood Festival of Speed 12-14th July 2002

Goodwood House, set in the rolling Sussex countryside hosted a racing car sculpture on the drive capturing the imaginative ambience of formula one racing.

Goodwood, known as 'Glorious Goodwood', lived up to its name for the Festival of Speed 2002. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere warm and friendly as we were treated to a wonderful motoring weekend.

Surrey Madhatter, Dave Shove, was one of the people who were keen to establish this event some fifteen years ago and it is now a much loved and well established event.

There is also a 'revival' race meeting (see what's on) where historic cars compete on the circuit.

The displays of historic cars were fabulously accessible

It was interesting to see the factors, speed, comfort, reliability etc juggled to meet particular purposes and budgets.

The grounds featured a splendid collection of historic vehicles....

...vehicles representing all aspects of motor racing paraded in front of the stands.

A large number of historic marques were represented and there were a lot of the 'figures' of motor racing including Stirling Moss (Who was asked by a policeman in the days before televesion "Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?")

Although the Bentleys were fast....

... formula one cars , inspired by the drag racing cars, showed their 'burn out' skills.

The spectators were astounded to hear about the power and speed of the street legal dragsters and were treated to a close up view, on the track and in the pits.

There was a large area set aside for suppliers and dealers' stalls selling racing memorabilia, tools accessories and so on. The main motor manufacturers and racing specialists had showrooms set up and there were plenty of food and refreshment facilities.

Santa Pod had a stand and a splendid display of drag cars and bikes.

It was hard not to snap away with the camera confronted by so many interesting designs, materials, shapes and colours

One of the charming features of the festival is the 'soap box' racing, powered by gravity alone where aerodynamics are just as important as in some of the other designs to be seen in the pits.

The opportunities to ride in tanks, to fly in helicopters, to browse displays of motoring art are just a few of the other things on offer from this very enjoyable and very well run meeting.

Sadly, Citroen were did not have a stand
